Postal service could end July 2”

January 26,2014: About 2, 000 people marched through the streets in support of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers, who were protesting against Canada Post's cuts of door-to-door mail delivery.

A number of companies, including TD Bank (TSX:TD), Virgin Mobile and American Express, have told customers not to expect bills in the mail in the event of a labour disruption.

Online shopping is a quick and easy way to buy products and get them delivered to your door but going online to buy something this week may be a waste of time if a strike commences.

Ninety per cent of union members voted in favour of a strike, and Canada Post CEO Deepak Chopra officially rejected a letter requesting a two-week extension for the July 2 lockout. "If that happens, no mail or parcels are being accepted or delivered and everything in the system stays there until we are in a position to deliver that".

Today, Wednesday, June 29, is the last day Canada Post is ensuring delivery of priority parcels (national, regional and local) by June 30. "It's the primary way for businesses to pay each other". There has been a lot of talk about a strike or lockout, but the president of the union is hopeful that negotiations will be reached and mail service will not be disrupted.

While there is still time to reach new agreements, a legal work disruption could occur as early as July 2, 2016, said Canada Post.

The two sides aren't yet at an impasse according to Palacek, but the union is still seeking a few things through negotiations, though Canada Post hasn't been agreeable.

Crude Oil Inventories Continued to Drop Last Week
Norway produced about 2.1% of the world's oil output in May, according to the International Energy Agency. The August contract is now trading higher on the session by 2.43% to $49.06 per barrel.

"Canada Post has been attempting to move the negotiations forward since December with little success". "That's unacceptable to us".

Canada Post is looking for changes to benefits for new employees, and the ability to hire part-time or temporary staff instead of paying double-time to weekend workers.

"We're seeing the impact that the uncertainty is causing in our facilities", said Jon Hamilton, a spokesman for the postal service.

The amount of mail arriving in our mailboxes continues to dwindle as more and more alternatives come into use.

Manitoba Public Insurance also has a plan in place to get drivers licenses, claim information, and cheques to customers.

John Hamilton, a Canada Post spokesperson, acknowledges some small-business customers have been turning to online services for items, such as invoice payments.
