New trial for Adnan Syed, convicted killer in 'Serial'

A Baltimore judge has granted a new trial to a convicted murderer at the heart of the popular "Serial" podcast.

"The new development comes months after the Maryland Court of Special Appeals granted Syed's request for a review of his case, giving new momentum to his efforts to appeal his 2000 conviction in the murder of Baltimore high school student Hae Min Lee in January of 1999".

Syed's attorney, Justin Brown, tweeted: "WE WON A NEW TRIAL FOR ADNAN SYED!".

During a post-conviction hearing in early February, Syed's lawyers argued he deserved a retrial on the grounds that his original lawyer, Cristina Gutierrez, did not contact Asia McClain Chapman, an alibi witness who said she saw Syed at the Woodlawn library about the same time prosecutors say Lee was murdered. The engineer, Abraham Waranowitz, said he was not shown a crucial disclaimer about cell tower data that would have affected his testimony in the murder trial.

The case had been largely ignored in the media until it was taken up by the weekly podcast and turned into a nail biting blockbuster.

Syed's attorney presented a motion saying AT&T, which provided cellular data for Syed's cellphone, warned prosecutors that incoming calls were not considered reliable for location.

Lee's body was found buried in a Baltimore park.

No date has yet been set for this new trial.

The podcast, which debuted in the winter of 2014, attracted millions of listeners and shattered records for the number of times a podcast has been streamed and downloaded.
