The flu vaccine is now being offered for free at county health departments across the state.

The number of patients hospitalized with laboratory-confirmed influenza was 913, an 8 percent decrease over last week.

At this rate, the current flu season will be the deadliest of the decade, as 2014-15 saw 157 flu-related deaths.

14,000 new cases are popping up a week and 20 children have died, five alone in the last week of January.

One can also get a seasonal flu vaccine for protection from the flu. Four different strains of flu have been detected this season. One of the most important take aways from this data is that it's still not too late to get a flu shot if you have not already done so.

While officials say that we are reaching a peak in cases, they want to remind families that flu season isn't over just yet. 19 people aged 5 to 24 have been hospitalized for the flu this season, while at this point previous year only one person in that age range had needed hospitalization.

This means there's no more nasal flu vaccine, which experts found practically ineffective.

Flu activity in SC is high and widespread right now.

Greene County residents can schedule an appointment for a flu shot at the offices of Greene County Public Health in Xenia.

According to CBS News, adults are less likely to keep up with the recommended vaccine levels, especially the flu vaccine. And in Montgomery County, flu shots are available at the Dayton and Montgomery County Public Health immunization clinic.

Another way to help prevent the spread of flu and other winter viruses is to practice good health habits including frequent hand washing with soapy water or use of alcohol-based hand sanitizers, and covering coughs and sneezes with a sleeve or tissue.
