Acosta, first Hispanic Trump cabinet pick

Acosta, first Hispanic Trump cabinet pick”

A senior administration official said Trump plans to announce Acosta as his labor secretary nominee, Politico reported. Before returning to the private sector, Mr. Acosta had a decades-long public service career, serving in three presidentially appointed and Senate-confirmed positions.

One of the biggest forces in labor unions is welcoming President Trump's new pick for Labor secretary, after harshly criticizing Trump's since-withdrawn first choice. He previously served as the first Hispanic assistant attorney general and as USA attorney for the Southern District of Florida, as well as on the National Labor Relations Board.

Acosta clerked for Judge Samuel Alito on the US Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit after graduating from Harvard Law School.

This is a breaking news story and will be updated as more information becomes available.

Senator Debbie Stabenow, D-Mich., called Puzder's withdrawal a win for working families, claiming he showed a stunning disregard for fair pay and the health and safety of his employees.

Fierstein later recanted her accusations, and has defended Puzder's nomination.

Puzder was the CEO of the company that owns Hardee's and Carl's Jr. fast-food chains.

Several Republicans on the Senate HELP committee would not commit to voting for Puzder's confirmation.

Henning also appeared in disguise to discuss her experience in a 1990 Oprah episode about domestic violence. Puzder said he has fully paid back taxes to the IRS and state of California.

"The Labor Secretary is not just another Cabinet member - his or her actions directly impact our wages, safety and rights on the job every single day".

Puzder needed support from at least 50 of the 52 Republicans in the Senate, as no Democrats or independents pledged to vote for him.

According to The Washington Post, the organization has already received some of the records, which include allegations from Puzder's ex-wife, Lisa Fierstein, that he assaulted her.
