Senate confirms Gorsuch for Supreme Court

Senate confirms Gorsuch for Supreme Court”

After weeks of turmoil, the Senate confirmed Trump nominee Neil Gorsuch as the Supreme Court's youngest justice Friday, filling a 14-month vacancy after the death of Antonin Scalia and restoring a rightward tilt that could last for years. GOP Sen. Johnny Isakson of Georgia, who has been recovering from back surgery, did not vote.

If Trump successfully nominates conservative justices to fill their roles, the court's ideological makeup will be altered, possibly for decades.

Judge Neil Gorsuch testifies during the third day of his Supreme Court confirmation hearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee in the Hart Senate Office Building on Capitol Hill, March 22, 2017 in Washington.

The path to confirmation took unprecedented steps. Democrats scoffed at the notion, instead pegging him as a pro-business ideologue who would side with big corporations over everyday Americans.

"He's going to make the American people proud", Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said.

Burr and Tillis voted for Gorsuch's confirmation in a 54-45 vote. "He's an exceptional choice", he said.

Wichita State to join American Athletic Conference
There was disappointment, however, in that they were a No. 10 seed in its region after winning the Missouri Valley tournament. The focus of the move is men's basketball, where the Shockers have thrived in recent seasons under Gregg Marshall.

The move comes in the wake of a contentious battle this week in the Senate over the confirmation of Neil Gorsuch when the Republicans who control the chamber used the "nuclear option" to neutralize the filibuster for nominees to the Supreme Court. Many Republicans bemoaned reaching that point, too, but they blamed Democrats for pushing them to it.

The confirmation process was bitter and partisan, especially after the Republican-controlled Senate refused past year to hold hearings for Merrick Garland, who President Obama nominated for the court. Lindsey Graham of SC, a senior Republican.

McConnell made have swapped a Supreme Court justice that doesn't change the balance of the court for giving Senate Democrats the power to confirm future liberal Supreme Court justices without a single Republican vote. "In doing so, they have deeply damaged the integrity of the Senate and the Supreme Court itself".

The vote broke down largely on party lines.

Senate Democrats blocked the nomination in the first successful filibuster of a Supreme Court nominee in almost 50 years.

The rules change came after Senate Democrats successfully blocked his nomination with the filibuster in place. After assembling the pledges of 41 Senate Democrats to iniate the first partisan filibuster of a Supreme Court nominee, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) sought to prevent a vote of the full Senate.
