Nuclear-armed North Korea on Tuesday marked a military anniversary with a conventional firing drill, reports said, as the South announced joint naval exercises with a United States aircraft carrier in the flashpoint region.

South Korea's Yonhap news agency, citing an unnamed government source, reported that Pyongyang appeared to have deployed a number of long-range artillery units in the region of Wonsan, which is a coastal North Korean area.

Maeil Business wrote: "When a military clash happens in the Korean Peninsula, South Korea will be the first target of North Korea and its military will hold joint operations with USA troops to fight back".

Tuesday marks the 85th anniversary of the founding of North Korea's military, a significant date in the country's calendar.

China's nuclear envoy Wu Dawei also arrived in Japan on Tuesday to exchange views on a solution on the Korean Peninsula, China's foreign ministry said.

US President Donald Trump personally lobbied UN Security Council members on Monday, telling them they must be prepared to "impose additional and stronger sanctions on North Korea".

"The protection of US citizens is one of the Department's highest priorities", the State Department said in a statement.

The State Department also said it was aware of the report about a USA citizen being detained, but declined further comment "due to privacy considerations".

An official from South Korea's navy said Tuesday the USS Michigan is making a routine stop to rest its crews and reload supplies.

"This is a real threat to the world, whether we want to talk about it or not", Trump said Monday at a lunch for ambassadors of countries who sit on the Security Council. The nuclear-powered submarine is built to carry and launch ballistic missiles and Tomahawk cruise missiles.

The key Chinese border port of Quanhe, which typically rumbles with several hundred trucks carrying goods between China and North Korea's Special Economic Zone, was shut on Tuesday, but expected to reopen a day later.
