Suspected ISI agent Altaf Qureshi was held during Gujarat riots

Suspected ISI agent Altaf Qureshi was held during Gujarat riots”

A suspected agent of Pakistani intelligence agency ISI was arrested on Wednesday in Faizabad in Uttar Pradesh by the Anti- Terrorism Squad (ATS) in coordination with Military Intelligence, police said. Aftab, who was arrested from Faizabad, is believed to have received training from the ISI in Pakistan and was in constant touch with the Pakistan high commissioner, UP ATS said.

In a major breakthrough, the UP ATS team yesterday busted an espionage racket and arrested suspected ISI agents from Faizabad and Mumbai. So far, three suspects of the ISI have been arrested since Wednesday. He had direct links with ISI in Pakistan. "The Maharashtra ATS is now obtaining details of all bank accounts held by Qureshi and Naviwala and examining the bank statements, after which the duo will be questioned as to the transactions that they have made over the years", The Asian Age report said.

"He (Aftab Ali) was in constant touch with Pakistan High Commission", the ATS said in a statement, according to ABP News.

During interrogation, names of some more persons cropped up, the official said, adding more arrests are likely.

Busting an organised spying racket funded by ISI, ATS found out that money was routed to terror operatives in India via Javed and Altaf, the two Mumbai-based hawala operators.

"Qureshi was the paid employee of Naviwala, who is involved in hawala trade since 2009".

French court rejects Serbian extradition request for Haradinaj
However, he has been tried by a UN Tribunal in The Hague and acquitted on two separate trials in 2004 and 2012. His government had previously said it may abolish its extradition treaty with France if he was not handed over.

He had allegedly provided information about the army's movements and units in Faizabad, Lucknow and Amritsar, he said.

Qureshi would deposit money in Aftab's Lucknow account to carry out espionage activities.

The police said Naviwala had migrated to Mumbai from Dhoraji area in Gujarat's Rajkot district.

Earlier, the Uttar Pradesh police had warned of a possible terror attack in the state by ISI-trained militants.

Central intelligence agencies have been sharing inputs with the UP Police since February about increased activity of terrorists in the state. Recently, some self-radicalised youths were also arrested by the UP Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS).
