Avocados are putting people in hospital

Avocados are putting people in hospital”

No joke. Doctors have reported a worryingly high rise in the number of cases of the painful injury known as "avocado hand" and it's the definition of first world problems.

We've all been there when we've battled to cut an avocado.

So in an effort to warn people of these kitchen hazards the British Association of Plastic, Reconstructive, and Aesthetic Surgeons are calling for avocados to feature a safety label to prevent more frequent visits to the ER. Avocado hand happens when someone holding an avocado, slices through the fruit with too much pressure and slashes their hand, sometimes even striking a nerve. He suggests slicing the fruit in half, twisting off the top half of the avocado and scooping the stone out with a spoon.

Simon Eccles, a surgeon in London's Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, claims that he deals with an average of four avocado hands weekly.

Well, at least it has for a lot of people and that's where the term "Avocado Hand" comes from.

Said Mets manager Terry Collins: "Pretty tough situation to put him in, but it's what we had to do". He had multiple at-bats in an extended spring training game Saturday in Port St.

We like the way you think, Eccles. Overripe avocados tend to turn from a pleasant green color to brown.

"The avocados were harvested and frozen when perfectly ripe so they retain flavour, texture, aroma, and colour", they said.

There you have it, avocado lovers - be careful when you operate with the, obviously, hazardous fruit.

The NYT first shed light on this super serious issue on May 1, noting that while U.S. hospitals don't track data about what ingredients cause kitchen injuries, "anecdotally, doctors say they see a number of avocado-related cooking injuries annually - enough to notice". Then basically just use common sense (don't stab at the pit with the tip of the knife), or take five minutes and absorb the advice in the videos below that trained professionals have been dispensing for years.

If all else fails, there's even a special avocado slicer and pit remover on the market with plastic blades that cut through the skin and fruit of the avocado, but not your fingers.
