Dayton signs Real ID bill, averting travel woes for 2018

Dayton signs Real ID bill, averting travel woes for 2018”

If Minnesota wins an extension, as have many other states, residents could still use their regular driver's licenses at federal checkpoints, such as those at airports, through 2020.

A handful of lawmakers remained holdouts, bothered by the specter of federal intrusion: "It is subjecting our state to the federal government", said Sen. The compromise bill passed the House on a 120-11 vote late Wednesday afternoon, then passed the Senate on a 57-8 vote.

Gov. Dayton has signed the Real ID bill into law while battling over the budget.

The impasse is reminiscent of what happened in 2011, the last time Dayton and a Republican-controlled Legislature faced off to pass a two-year state budget. Daudt balked at the idea but said he would hear out Gazelka. By counting the courts and cyber security funding priorities separately, Dayton wasn't actually meeting Republicans halfway, he said.

Minnesotans can continue to use their current driver's license as a form of identification to board domestic flights until January 22, 2018.

Republicans said they would respond with a counteroffer, and talks were scheduled to continue into the evening. He says cutting that much would harm "real programs and real people". In the end, the Real ID measure is silent on that question.

He received a replica of the Monument Park plaque and retired number, as well as 14-karat white gold career milestone ring. But at least there won't be a fake Aretha Franklin serenading him with "RE2PECT" -- we think.

Meanwhile, the state edged closer to a January 2018 deadline by which it must approve Real ID standards, or leave Minnesotans unable to fly or visit military facilities without a passport.

State officials expect to begin issuing the new IDs sometime next year.

"Minnesotans should be confident that when they get to the airport they'll be allowed to fly", said Rep. Gene Pelowski Jr., DFL-Winona.

Minnesota has adopted the federal Real ID standards for driver's licenses after years of debate.

But the two sides spent Thursday outside of negotiating room and instead in the public eye, criticizing each other's budget proposals and calling on the other side to make the next move.
