DHS to extend protections for Haitians 6 months

DHS to extend protections for Haitians 6 months”

"So it doesn't only impact the Haitian people who are on protected status, but our community".

Haitian American legislator Dr Mathieu Eugene is rallying support for undocumented Haitians who are under the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) programme.

Haitian TPS beneficiaries will be required to re-register to be allowed to seek employment. A final decision about the long-term fate of those immigrants will be decided at a later date.

The Haitians have had the special protected status since the catastrophic 7.0-magnitude natural disaster, which destroyed a large portion of Port-au-Prince on January 12, 2010.

Haitian immigrants living in the United States under temporary protected status will be able to stay here legally until January 22 under a six-month extension of the humanitarian designation by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

Haiti's TPS designation expires in July of this year, which means that Haitians with this status may be deported from the U.S. For months now, various stakeholders have been pressing DHS to renew the designation, citing disruptions in the lives of Haitians who are settled in the United States, and risky conditions in Haiti exacerbated by a 2016 hurricane and a cholera epidemic started by United Nations peacekeepers in 2010.

"It's very unfortunate that the federal government would take this position with the Haitian community - singling out the Haitian community", Walsh said as he marched in the annual Haitian parade yesterday in Mattapan.

Kelly chose to extend TPS for six months ― until early next year.

"This six-month extension should allow Haitian TPS recipients living in the United States time to attain travel documents and make other necessary arrangements for their ultimate departure from the United States, and should also provide the Haitian government with the time it needs to prepare for the future repatriation of all current TPS recipients", said Secretary Kelly. The officials briefed reporters on the condition of anonymity despite President Donald Trump's insistence that anonymous sources shouldn't be trusted.

"If the administration declines to extend TPS, they will rip apart thousands of Haitian immigrant families who have sought temporary refuge in the USA while their country recovers", Carl Lipscombe, deputy director of Black Alliance for Just Immigration (BAJI), tells Colorlines."The government will also be sending the message that Black, immigrant and poor communities are no longer welcome in the United States". TPS grants temporary permission to live, study and work legally in the U.S.to immigrants whose homelands are in crisis.

Unfortunately, this was Haiti and Haitians best chance, and it was DHS' opportunity to do the right thing by granting extension for 18 months.

Senior DHS officials said no decision has been made about whether the program will be terminated for Haitians in January 2018 or extended once more, but Kelly said in a statement he believes "there are indications that Haiti - if its recovery from the 2010 quake continues at pace - may not warrant further TPS extension past January 2018". Some analysts say administrations have used it as a backdoor amnesty for illegal immigrants from countries that suffer catastrophes. Immigration was a top campaign issue and one that's important to his political base.

Nine countries now have designated temporary protected status.

Decisions about renewing such protections for designated countries are supposed to be based on whether the conditions have improved enough to safely send people home.

The Trump administration filed court papers Monday aimed at getting a judge to reconsider his ruling blocking the president's executive order to cut funding from sanctuary cities that limit cooperation with USA immigration authorities.

It's a decision Congresswoman Frederica Wilson does not agree with. The Department of Homeland Security had been debating whether to issue another extension, and some top officials reportedly opposed it.

"I hope they help my parents and they keep me here", Bastien said before hearing that the TPS program had been extended.

Susan Church, chair of the New England Chapter of the American Immigration Lawyers Association.

"If TPS is terminated it means that these people are losing their status and they will lose employment authorization", she said.

Omarosa Manigault, an assistant to the president and director of communications for the Office of Public Liaison, cast the decision as benefiting Haitians.

"This is a "pack your bags" extension, not a real one", said Jeremy Cruz-Haicken, president of the UNITE HERE Local 737 labor union that represents almost 500 Haitian refugees who work at Walt Disney World.
