Google's AlphaGo A.I. Defeats Another Human Master

Google's AlphaGo A.I. Defeats Another Human Master”

A computer defeated China's top player of the ancient board game go on Tuesday in the latest test of whether artificial intelligence can master one of the last games that machines have yet to dominate.

Aside from three games against Ke Jie, Google's AlphaGo will also be paired with Gu Li in the game against Lian Xiao, who will also team up with AlphaGo in a double match.

The victory over the world's top player - which many thought would take decades to achieve - underlines the potential of artificial intelligence to take on humans at complex tasks.

Google DeepMind's Go-playing AI has defeated Ke Jie, the world's number one player, in the first of three games played in Wuzhen, China.

Although Ke Jie has been touted as the strongest human player in the game, it seems AlphaGo's quick-second moves seem to have outsmarted all participating human players as the AI has recently recorded a 60-game winning streak.

"We'll release some details of the architecture, of the games that AlphaGo plays against itself, later this week", said the DeepMind CEO. In 2016, AlphaGo dispatched South Korean grand master Lee Sedol, the then reigning world champion, in a 4-1 match.

Dayton signs Real ID bill, averting travel woes for 2018
The compromise bill passed the House on a 120-11 vote late Wednesday afternoon, then passed the Senate on a 57-8 vote. Republicans said they would respond with a counteroffer, and talks were scheduled to continue into the evening.

Go, most popular in countries such as China, South Korea and Japan, involves two contestants moving black and white stones across a square grid, aiming to seize the most territory. The instance of AlphaGo that defeated Ke Jie yesterday uses ten times less compute power than the version that played against Lee Sedol a year ago, and the new instance runs on a single Google cloud machine.

Lee was the first human to face AlphaGo.

Hayward said Go is the final frontier of board games, but the development has broader, more practical applications, from airline scheduling to routing online purchases. But perhaps the first event that made the public take note of the rise of AI, or artificial intelligence, came a few months earlier than that.

On Monday night, Ke said on China's Twitter-like Weibo platform that "the advancement of AI has far exceeded our imagination" but added he would never play it again after this week.

Some calculate that there are 10 to the 360th power possible go positions, far more than chess or shogi. Ke mentioned that the gap between humans and A.I. was widening greatly, and AlphaGo was beginning to move away from using human teachers as inspiration, and starting to develop its own methods for playing the game.

Although Reuters reports that Eric Schmidt, executive chairman of Google parent Alphabet, watched the match in person in China, The Times notes that "there was no obvious live video of the event" available to viewers on the Chinese mainland.
