Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales”

So, as they say, your mileage may vary with "Dead Men Tell No Tales". With this, the uncalled-for fifth chapter in the franchise, Pirates has officially outstayed its welcome.

Some six years after the fourth Pirates of the Caribbean movie, On Stranger Tides, scored a cool billion dollars at the box office, the inevitable fifth installment is finally nearly here, as Disney endeavours to see if there's still life in the swashbuckling adventure franchise given a general audience cooling on Johnny Depp in recent years.

Are you excited to see Captain Barbossa return? One early sequence involves a bank robbery by Jack Sparrow and his crew that goes very badly wrong, and it should be absolutely hilarious.

For this film, subtitled "Dead Men Tell No Tales", Disney has hired a lesser-known filmmaking duo to reanimate the series - a pair of Norweigan filmmakers, Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg, who helmed the 2012 oceanic adventure film "Kon-Tiki". It recaptures much of what we all loved about this franchise way back in 2003: the swashbuckling action, humor, romance, and that fantastic orchestral theme.

At the centre of it all is a certain pirate called Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp), who pretty much just bungles around willy-nilly, somehow managing to remain in the eye of the storm, unharmed, no matter what happens around him. "I've asked literally eight other people who saw this movie to answer a couple specific questions and no one has been able to do it".

Dead Men Tell No Tales is the amusement ride movie we expected when Curse of the Black Pearl kicked off the series and were grateful when it wasn't.

In a quest to release his father Will (Orlando Bloom) from the curse of The Flying Dutchman, Henry Turner (Brenton Thwaites) must find Poseidon's mythical trident in order to break all sea curses and bring the boat and his father to the surface. That's because Depp clearly loves playing the character.

Geoffrey Rush On How 'Pirates Of The Caribbean 5' Will Be Different

She is a welcome replacement for Keira Knightley as the female lead.

Universal Pictures has signed on more A-listers to star in its new monster franchise, the studio announced on Monday.

Also, we have Oscar winners Geoffrey Rush and Javier Bardem hamming it up beneath all the makeup and CGI trickery, and that's a hoot.

Salazar's Revenge is a marked improvement and anchors the outlandish action to solid performances from two charismatic young actors, Kaya Scodelario and Brenton Thwaites, with simmering on-screen chemistry.

Andrew Barker, Variety: "Lackluster as it is, Dead Men Tell No Tales is not an aggressively unpleasant time at the cinema". I believe you'll leave the theater feeling more satisfied than not about Dead Men Tell No Tales. Its primary objective, aside from making money, appears to be making up for the last movie.

There is enough good stuff here to want Captain Jack back. Late in the day a truly daft moment shows a shark jumping over Depp. This certainly isn't the end of the world and is consistent with review scores the franchise has received in the last 10 years.
