Nishikori fights way into Geneva Open semis

Nishikori fights way into Geneva Open semis”

Japan's Kei Nishikori gestures after winning a game against South Africa's Kevin Anderson, during the quarter final round match of the Geneva Open tennis tournament, in Geneva, Switzerland, Thursday, May 25, 2017.

Stan Wawrinka stormed back from a set down to beat German qualifier Mischa Zverev 4-6 6-3 6-3 and retain the men's title in Geneva on Saturday.

A break of serve in the sixth game of the opening set was enough for Wawrinka to eventually take the opener.

Victory against Zverev avenged a defeat when Wawrinka last faced him, at another Swiss tournament in Basel last October. Still, he soon created a second match point with a forehand crosscourt service return for a victor.

Second seed Tsonga served 14 aces to reach the 26th final of his career, and his first on the red dirt, where he will face Tomas Berdych after the Czech defeated top seed Milos Raonic of Canada 7-6 (5) 7-6 (2).

But neither side has sought to make the race an explicit referendum on the president, or the upheaval that has Washington in fits. Quist's campaign said he had raised $5 million, including more than 200,000 contributions averaging just under $24.

Kei Nishikori and Stan Wawrinka each survived significant scares as they battled through to the semi-finals of the Geneva Open on Thursday.

Earlier, Zverev wasted two match-point chances on Nishikori's serve before breezing through his next service game to clinch with a backhand volley victor.

Zverev, 29, had been bidding for his maiden tour title in the 33rd-ranked player's first final appearance in seven years. The Russia-born German's second runner-up finish comes more than six years after his first, at Metz, France.

"It was a long week for me", Zverev said.

Meanwhile, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga prepared for the French Open in flawless style by claiming his maiden clay court title, beating Czech Tomas Berdych 7-6 (2) 7-5 in the Lyon Open final on Saturday.
