Why today is a holiday

President Donald Trump has proclaimed Memorial Day as a Day of Prayer for Permanent Peace with the governor's of the 50 states following his lead so that American and state flags will be flying at half-staff from 8 a.m. until noon, then returning to full-staff. Memorial Day comes with a price.

Will you visit the burial place of your passed family members and friends today? That holiday is in November and rightly celebrates and honors all, living and dead, who have served in our nation's armed forces.

The idea came after General John A. Logan heard about a celebration in 1866, where many shops closed down and graves of fallen soldiers were decorated. While this holiday is often a time for families to gather for traditions they hold dear, Memorial Day should also be a time of reflection and gratitude.

Veterans groups say a growing military-civilian disconnect contributes to a feeling that Memorial Day has been overshadowed. But Memorial Day, observed on the last Monday of May, honors the men and women who died while serving in the US military.

Honoring those who gave their lives in the service of the nation is a duty Americans should gladly accept.

Today, in the USA we celebrate Memorial Day.

Flags have been flying this weekend in remembrance and respect for the military men and women who gave their lives in the defense of the country. James E. Wright explains the terms "monument" and "memorial" are sometimes used interchangeably to describe the many locations across the United States which honor the fallen.

The pleasures this holiday weekend affords and, more importantly, the incalculable daily blessing of living in a free land were paid for in part with the blood of American soldiers. This year, I hope people take the time to recognize the true meaning of Memorial Day and not merely relegate it to a day of simple rest and relaxation. To those not serving, he wished for them to be safe and enjoy a day of freedom that was provided by those who fight for our country.

Modesitt told service attendees that he sees a problem with this perception of the holiday, which was officially established in 1971 and dates back to the American Civil War. A place where we may not be able to freely express our opinions or afford the meat for our Memorial Day BBQ.
