ESPN reportedly lays off Hall of Fame NFL reporter John Claytonā€¯

John Clayton, the ESPN NFL writer known for his self-lacerating "Hey, Mom, I'm done with my segment!" headbanger commercial for "SportsCenter", reportedly has parted with the company as part of its recent massive layoffs.

The longtime National Football League insider, who has been a fixture of ESPN's National Football League coverage for 23 years, announced that he will no longer be contributing to the network.

Clayton, based in the Puget Sound area, no longer will be covering the league for ESPN on television or online but will continue his radio show in Seattle.

The network's National Football League coverage has taken previous blows with the departure of Ed Werder, who'd been with ESPN since 1998, and Trent Dilfer, the Super Bowl-winning quarterback who joined the network as an analyst in 2008. That name is John Clayton, longtime ESPN NFL insider.

Clayton alluded to the ad in his announcement Wednesday. "Trent Dilfer, Ed Werder and Britt McHenry are also out", WEEI recalled. It is the end of an era for "The Professor", who had been at the Worldwide Leader for 23 years.

ESPN announced in April it was laying off about 100 people, including some well-known on-air names. Analysts Charles Woodson, Randy Moss and Matt Hasselback were brought in to take their places on ESPN's two signature studio shows, "Sunday NFL Countdown" and "Monday Night Countdown".
