Volquez Pitches Season's First No-Hitter

Volquez Pitches Season's First No-Hitter”

Right-hander Zack Greinke threw seven innings, giving up one earned run while striking out eight, and Nick Ahmed posted a two-run single in the eighth, helping the D-backs to a 3-2 win over the Marlins on Thursday at Marlins Park.

"I dedicated this game to Jose Fernandez and Yordano Ventura", Volquez said on the local broadcast (via MLB.com's Adrian Garro), referring to the two star pitchers.

Volquez needed just 98 pitches to complete the feat.

The surprising Arizona Diamondbacks (33-22), one of only top six teams in the major leagues playing at least.600 ball this season, are set to invade Marlins Park on Thursday night to play the Miami Marlins (21-30).

We also nearly knocked Volquez out in the opening AB, as he collided with Rey Fuentes as they headed to first-base (above).

That left it up to Owings, another pinch-hitter.

The Marlins had the tying run in scoring position in the eighth but reliever Archie Bradley struck out Giancarlo Stanton and Marcell Ozuna.

Sabathia (6-2) allowed one run and five hits in 6⅓ innings, struck out seven and walked none.

North Korea's latest missile test called 'substantial advance'
The White House has mooted talks with North Korea under the right conditions, which would include a halt to missile tests. But if it was sacked at a standard trajectory, it would have a range of at least 4,000 km (2,500 miles), experts said.

Schwarber homered on the first pitch after Mike Leake allowed two singles and hit a batter to load the bases in the seventh.

"It was special for me to dedicate the game to him", Volquez said.

MILWAUKEE - Chris Taylor hit a go-ahead grand slam off Carlos Torres in a five-run ninth inning, as the Los Angeles Dodgers rallied late for the second straight day.

He was an All-Star in 2008, when he went 17-6 with Cincinnati and was basically the lone bright spot for the Reds in what was a dismal season. The righty has pitched for six teams and is best known for winning Game 1 of the 2015 World Series for the Royals, not knowing his father had died earlier that day.

And then Paul Goldschmidt was called safe after shortstop JT Riddle fielded a high chopper but pulled first baseman Justin Bour off the bag with a high throw. He is 4-0 with a 2.96 ERA in eight career outings against Miami.

Diamondbacks: RHP Taijuan Walker (blister) had his bullpen session pushed back a second time to Saturday, and he won't start as scheduled in Sunday's series finale.

Fans could bring their dogs (and many did, since barking was heard all day throughout Marlins Park) to Saturday's game, part of an event created to support the Humane Society of Greater Miami.

Besides Alvarez, Sanchez and now Volquez, the other no-hitters for the Marlins were thrown by A.J. Burnett, Kevin Brown and Al Leiter. He entered the game with a meager 1-7 record and 3.99 ERA on the year.
