Mercedes try to solve Lewis Hamilton's vehicle problems which threaten title tilt

After starting 13th, Hamilton recovered to seventh place.

"It's still second place but it doesn't feel awfully good".

Mercedes star Lewis Hamilton is of the opinion that Ferrari wanted Sebastian Vettel to win Sunday's Monaco Grand Prix.

"They are pushing everything to make sure Sebastian will maximise on all of his weekends", the Briton continued. "We've just got to make sure we're ahead of them so we don't need to be in the same scenario".

Ferrari are giving Sebastian Vettel the Michael Schumacher treatment, according to the German's main title rival, Lewis Hamilton.

"The leading vehicle, it is very hard for him to get jumped unless the team decide to favour the other auto, so it's great for him (Vettel)", Hamilton said after the Monaco GP, via ESPN.

It was a landmark win for Ferrari, their first in Monaco since 2001 and a first 1-2 since 2010.

He had been called in first for his pitstop and released into traffic, losing precious time while Vettel stayed out for five laps more and banged in a series of quick laps before pitting and then coming out ahead. So the team result, the one-two, is good and congratulations from our side. It might be the other way."So yes, we are the underdog and we need to catch up".

Mercedes struggled with its tyre temperatures all weekend long and was unable to match Ferrari's pace, with Wolff believing it to show where the advantage in F1 now lies.

"They are finally where we were back in the days where you finish one and two and have to explain why the right guy won", he added.

"I was surprised myself when I came out ahead", Vettel said. He is keen for both drivers to work as a team and put as much pressure on Ferrari to overcome the 17-point deficit the Silver Arrows team have in the constructors' championship.

With Vettel's victory, Hamilton now sits 25 points behind in the F1 drivers' championship with 14 races remaining this season.

With Valtteri Bottas finishing fourth in Monaco to close to within 29 points of his teammate - compared to a gap of 62 points between the Ferrari drivers - Hamilton says he won't ask Mercedes to prioritize his own title challenge.

"We've definitely got to improve the understanding of the vehicle we have and see if we can do a better job", he added.

"Just because I can't afford for something doesn't mean it's not going to happen". We are under no illusion, we are not flawless and we have still got areas to improve on. "There's so many things we have got to look into to try to understand why one auto could make it work and the other couldn't".

On a circuit noted for the extreme difficulty it presents for overtaking, Hamilton was lucky simply to scrape into a points-paying result.
