Apple's new iMac Pro rocks 18-core CPU, Radeon Vega GPU

At its developer conference in San Jose, California, Apple unveiled new iMac desktop computers with brighter displays and faster Kaby Lake chips from Intel Corp and more powerful graphics processing for virtual reality applications. The new machines come in configurations of 8-, 10-, or 18-core Xeon processors, with a memory cache of up to 42 MB.

Apple last updated its iMacs in fall 2015. For graphics, there's a cutting-edge AMD Radeon Pro Vega with up to 16GB of VRAM and 400Gbps of bandwidth to deliver 11 teraflops of single precision compute power, but which can also do half-precision compute for 22Tflops. Meanwhile, the 27-inch 5K model will have a choice of Radeon Pro 570, 575, and 580 graphics cards, topping out at 8GB of VRAM.

The firm also teased an upcoming upgrade to its iMac (above), which it is touting as the most powerful Mac "ever". Fusion drives are standard on all 27-inchers and SSDs will go up to 2TB at twice the current rates. The truly insatiable will be able to add 128GB of ECC RAM and 4TB of PCIe SSD storage to their iMac Pros, as well.

The monitors themselves are getting a big boost, with a 500 nit upgrade in brightness, making them 43 percent brighter than its predecessors and more than a billion colors. The new MacBook Air models will also get a bump in processor speed. Steam VR for Mac is available now in beta form. They usually rely on 15-watt TDP processors (Thermal Design Power), but you can run it at 25 or 28 watts too.

Apple said the iMac Pro is scheduled to begin shipping in December, with prices starting at US$4,999 ($6,675).
