Egypt condemns IS-claimed Iran attacks

At least 42 people were wounded and 13 lost their lives.

Attackers raided Iran's parliament and opened fire at the Mausoleum of Ayatollah Khomeini a few kilometers south of the capital on Wednesday morning, in near simultaneous assaults that killed up to seven people, media reported.

Mohammad Javad Zarif in a tweet on Thursday called the comments on the attack in Tehran a day earlier "repugnant" and accused the USA of supporting terror.

The six attackers were Iranians who had joined IS, the deputy secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, Reza Seifollahi, said on state TV.

USA intelligence called the incident the worst domestic terror attack in Tehran since the 1980s, but an official said there had been signs IS was at least hoping to strike.

He added that the "Iranian people reject such USA claims of friendship".

The attackers targeted two symbolically significant places: the Parliament building and the mausoleum of the Islamic Republic's founder, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini-not to be confused with the country's current Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Islamic State claimed responsibility and threatened more attacks against Iran's majority Shi'ite population, seen by the hardline Sunni militants as heretics.

Even so, the speaker of parliament, Ali Larijani, said the attacks were just a "minor incident" and called the attackers "some cowardly terrorists".

In separate comments on Friday, Intelligence Minister Mahmoud Alawi said his forces have identified the hideout of the perpetrators of Tehran attacks.

The attack came as emboldened Sunni Arab states - backed by U.S. president Donald Trump - are hardening their stance against Iran.

Larijani also criticized a Wednesday decision by the US Senate to move forward on a new set of sanctions against Iran, including its elite Revolutionary Guards, a move that came on the same day as the Tehran attacks.

Iranian Brigadier General Hossein Salami of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has vowed to avenge the terror attack while Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said the attack would hopefully unite and strengthen his country's fight against terror.

He said anti-Iranian remarks by Saudi Arabia's foreign minister and US President Donald Trump are a "matter of disgrace" for them. Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir, speaking in Germany, said he did not know who was responsible and that "we condemn terrorist attacks anywhere they occur", the New York Times reported. "We still can not judge that Saudi Arabia has had a role in this terrorist incident".

After joining Daesh terrorist group, the five men had left Iran and were engaged in the terrorist group's operations in Iraq's Mosul and Syria's Raqqa, it added. The two attacks were the first launched by the group against Iran.

Iran is one of the powers leading the fight against IS militants in neighbouring Iraq and, beyond that, Syria.

The Islamic State group claimed the Tehran attacks; no link has emerged of Saudi Arabia's involvement.
