Cuban foreign minister slams Trump for rolling back Obama detente

Cuban foreign minister slams Trump for rolling back Obama detente”

If conservative anti-Castro Republicans hailed President Trump's decision to reverse some of the rapprochement with Cuba initiated by former President Barack Obama, others - particularly in rural areas - called the policy a misguided and isolationist one. The goal is to halt the flow of USA cash to the country's military and security services in a bid to increase pressure on Cuba's government.

The statement said a "strategy aimed at changing the political, economic and social system in Cuba, whether it seeks to achieve it through pressures and impositions, or by employing more subtle methods, will be doomed to failure". The Cuban state run news published an article painting Trump's move as vastly unpopular in the USA and backwards-thinking.

"As a result, smarTours and other tour operators alike will be able to continue to take Americans to visit Cuba legally until further notice".

Trump based his partial reversal of Obama's Cuba measures largely on human rights grounds.

However, Trump's criticism of the Cuban government for human rights abuses and the lack of multi-party elections made it clear that the thawing relations between the USA and Cuba had stopped.

In the first response by a Cuban official to a new, harsher Cuba policy unveiled by President Donald Trump last week, Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez said Monday that the island's government would not buckle to the new sanctions.

"Access Trips' tours will operate as planned, with our eight-day immersive culinary tours as well as our five-day weekend trips to Havana both created to help our guests explore Cuban culture through its cuisine". U.S. air carriers and cruise ships will still be allowed to serve on the island.

"The changes he announced will assist Cubans struggling for liberty by ensuring that US policy toward Cuba actually benefits the Cuban people".

The author was part of an ABA delegation that visited Cuba a couple years ago.

Carnival also said it has requested approval its other brands to travel to Cuba in the future.

"They made a deal with a government that spread violence and instability in the region and nothing they got, think about it, nothing they got, they fought for everything and we just didn't fight hard enough, but now, those days are over", Trump said.

Once again, the US Government resorts to coercive methods of the past when it adopts measures aimed at stepping up the blockade, effective since February 1962, which not only causes harm and deprivations to the Cuban people and is the main obstacle to our economic development, but also affects the sovereignty and interests of other countries, which arouses worldwide rejection. This is likely to affect pending hotel projects with Cuban companies that have ties to the military.

By acceding to the U.S. presidency, billionaire Donald Trump had to yield the reins of his empire, but it appears that his revenues from his Florida private club and book sales have swelled.

It went on to cite police killings and brutality, racial discrimination, child labor, high numbers of firearm deaths, a goal of imposing a new US healthcare system that would leave 23 million Americans without health insurance, salary inequality between men and women, the marginalization of refugees and migrants, the desire to wall out the Mexican neighbors of the United States, and the USA withdrawal from the Paris Agreement on climate change.

"It is important to note that the extent of these changes will not be known until the Treasury and Commerce Department issue updated regulations in the next few months-and ASTA plans to fully participate in that process", he said.

His critics, however, have questioned why his administration is now singling out Cuba for human rights abuses but downplaying the issue in other parts of the world, including Saudi Arabia, a close US ally Trump visited last month where political parties and protests are banned. "That progress now appears to be at great risk". In 2016, the U.S. exported over $245 million dollars - measured on a nominal basis - worth of goods and services to Cuba and imported nothing, according to the U.S. Census Bureau on Foreign Trade.
