Rape survivor faces 4th acid attack in UP

Rape survivor faces 4th acid attack in UP”

The 35-year-old mother, who was allegedly gangraped in 2008 over a property dispute, was at a women's hostel in Uttar Pradesh state capital Lucknow when a man scaled the walls and poured the chemical onto her. In between, in 2012, she had been attacked with a knife.

NDTV reported that the attack took place sometime between 8 pm and 9 pm on Saturday when she stepped out of her hostel to fill water from a hand-pump. She suffered injuries on her face and chest.

"The victim is admitted in the trauma centre and her condition is serious".

"She used to live in a working women hostel".

Adityanath had visited her in the hospital and announced assistance of Rs 1 lakh. "There is an increase in number of rapes, acid attack, and lynching cases now", Congress leader Shobha Oza told ANI.

Today, talking to a private news channel, the chief minister said the hostel the woman resides in is absolutely safe and no outsider could get in. "But the FIR will have to be filed by the family, whom we have informed about the incident", he said.

"Ye ghatna sachmuch ghatna hai ya fir ghatna ke naam par kuchh log kewal badnaam karne ki sajish rach rahe hain (Has this attack really happened or are some people hatching a conspiracy to defame the state government)", he said.

"The law and order has completed broken down in UP".

Police said a formal complaint is yet to be registered as the family is yet to give a complaint. The victim had lodged a written complaint in this connection with the police then. The attack took place despite her getting round-the-clock police protection and an armed guard inside the hostel. I had visited her at the KGMU and then we made arrangements for her treatment and security.

The series of attacks on the woman began in 2009 when two men had allegedly raped and attacked her with acid over a property dispute in her home at Unchahar, 100 kilometres from Lucknow.

According to government figures, there are hundreds of such attacks involving acid each year in India, although campaigners say the real figures are much higher. The alleged victim, in her 30s, had earlier said she had been forced to drink acid on a train from Rae Bareli but the charge could not be established by the Government Railway Police.
