Kashmir shuts down on Burhan Wani death anniversary

Kashmir shuts down on Burhan Wani death anniversary”

More than 100 innocent Kashmiris were killed and thousands of others were injured by the Indian troops.

Indian security forces have in recent years dealt a series of blows against dozens of militant groups fighting for independence or a merger of the Himalayan territory with Pakistan.

Thousands of police and paramilitary troopers are on a high alert with the authorities banning mobile internet while curfew-like restrictions have been imposed in some parts of Kashmir ahead of the first death anniversary of Hizb commander Burhan Wani.

Since he was killed amid a rise in violence and separatist sentiment across the Jammu and Kashmir state, which has been at the centre of an intense struggle between India and Pakistan for decades, it resulted in numerous protests against Indian rule in the disputed region.

Given the massive unrest triggered past year due to Wani's killing, authorities had beefed up security to ensure that the situation remains under control.

Due to security clampdown, people preferred to stay indoors today.

All roadblocks have been removed by the security forces and shops and business establishments, which remain open on Sundays, reopened this morning in Srinagar. The Indian security establishment considers Wani as a militant leader, who not only planned attacks against the security personnel in Jammu and Kashmir, but was also a popular recruiter who lured Kashmiri youth to join militancy.

Indian troops have sealed all roads leading to Wani's hometown in Tral area of south Kashmir to prevent people from going there.

Wani, who was the poster boy of the terror outfit Hizbul Mujahideen, in Kashmir Valley, was gunned down in an encounter in Anantnag district of Jammu and Kashmir on July 8 past year.

The authorities put curbs on movement of separatist leaders.

On precautionary measures the Kashmir government suspended Amarnath Yatra for a day, which will be resumed on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Police has asked the internet service providers to block all social media sites or shut down their services in Kashmir from 10 pm tonight till further orders in view of the Hurriyat programme. The services were snapped yesterday.

External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Gopal Baglay condemned in a tweet the praises showered upon Wani and other Kashmiri militants by the Pakistan government and its army on his first death anniversary. "(Mere bas mein hota toh Burhan Wani ko zinda rakhta aur unse dialogue karta)", Soz was quoted as saying by ANI.

The police fired tear gas canisters when protesters threw rocks at them - an increasingly common tactic in the region. Curfew was also imposed in Shopian town of South Kashmir and Trehgam in North Kashmir's Kupwara district.
