Palestinian shot dead by Israeli soldiers in Hebron area”

Israel then reopened the compound to Muslim worshippers on Sunday after imposing new security measures, including metal detectors and additional security cameras.

The assailants were killed by security forces and Israeli authorities briefly closed the compound.

Tensions have soared since Friday.

Sheikh Ekrima Sabri, the grand mufti of Jerusalem who was injured on Tuesday, said Palestinians will not accept for Israelis to stop Palestinians from praying in al-Aqsa while allowing settlers to continue their violations.

Palestinian eyewitnesses said Israeli forces also raided Al-Maqased Hospital, looking for Palestinian injured during the clashes.

Many worshipers refused to go through the new security gates and prayed outside the compound.

"[These measures] come in framework of the occupation's plans to change the historic status quo in Jerusalem and the blessed al-Aqsa Mosque", Hamdallah said.

The incident took place before dawn in the West Bank village of Nabi Saleh, near the city of Ramallah, and no Israeli casualties were reported.

The site - known as the Temple Mount to Jews and Haram al-Sharif, or Noble Sanctuary, to Muslims - is at the heart of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Got you covered? 300000 umbrellas stolen in share scheme start-up
The problem, Mr Shuping admitted, was figuring out how to get people to return the umbrellas once they were done using them. The scheme asks for a 19 yuan (£2.16) deposit with the user charged 0.5 yuan (6p) for every half an hour.

In a statement, Israeli police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said that Israeli forces removed worshippers at Lions' Gate for allegedly blocking the street while performing prayers.

The Palestinians feared that Israel would retake control of the site by stealth.

"I suggest to the demonstrators to turn their rage at the terrorists who created the need for this [the placement of metal detectors], and not the police", he wrote on Facebook.

On Monday, Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas's Fatah party had called for a "day of rage" in protest against the new security measures at Temple Mount.

The Israeli police relaxed its open-fire regulations in December 2015, permitting officers to open fire with live ammunition on those throwing stones or firebombs as an initial option, without having to use non-lethal weapons first.

In the meantime, Abbas is in touch with Arab and global leaders to try to "prevent a deterioration of the situation", it said.

When the al-Aqsa compound reopened, metal detectors had been installed, which angered Muslim religious authorities.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Saturday that he had made a decision to reopen the site with increased security measures but promised to "maintain the status-quo".
