Iran's Foreign Ministry Summons Kuwaiti Charge D'affaires

Iran's Foreign Ministry Summons Kuwaiti Charge D'affaires”

Kuwait ordered the Iranian ambassador on Thursday to leave the country within 48 days, Iran's ISNA news agency reported, in an escalating row following a court case which implicated "Iranian parties" in a spy cell.

It's noteworthy that the decision is linked to the case of a terrorist cell broken up in 2015 that the Kuwait authorities said had contacts with Iran and Hizbollah.

Citing a Foreign Ministry source, Kuwait's official KUNA new agency reported Thursday that Kuwait City chose to freeze any activities involving joint committees between the two countries following the ruling by Kuwait's top court in a case known as the "Abdali cell".

Kuwait's foreign ministry said in a statement the decision was taken after the Supreme Court found last month that "Iranian sides helped and supported the cell members".

Kuwaiti judiciary had earlier charged 25 of its Shia nationals and an Iranian with spying for Tehran and the Lebanese Hezbollah movement.

On Wednesday, Kuwait's Interior Ministry published photos of 16 people who were sentenced in absentia by a court in the Abdali cell case. "[Kuwait said] Alireza Enayati, the Iranian ambassador, must leave", ISNA said.

During the meeting, the Kuwaiti diplomat was also reminded that the Islamic Republic of Iran has always showed responsible behaviour towards regional states, including Kuwait, during the country's hard times, he added. They were also convicted of smuggling explosives from Iran. They were tried and convicted after guns and explosives were discovered in a raid.

The supreme court, whose rulings are final, overturned their acquittal on June 18 and sentenced them to between five and 15 years in prison.

In February, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani visited Kuwait City a month after the emirate launched a dialogue with Iran in a bid to normalize Gulf-Iran relations.
