United Nations envoy calls for de-escalation of violence in Jerusalem

United Nations envoy calls for de-escalation of violence in Jerusalem”

The Israeli army said the three Israelis were killed when a young Palestinian man from a nearby village breached the security of the settlement and carried out a stabbing attack.

Tensions have been high for days with Palestinians hurling rocks and Israeli police using stun grenades after the detectors were installed.

Two of the victims died soon after the attack in the area known as Neve Tsuf, north of Ramallah.

A fourth Israeli was wounded in the attack, Magen David Adom, Israel's ambulance service, told CNN.

"During that period, Israeli forces have killed more than 255 Palestinians, majority said by Israel to be attackers".

The compound is considered the third holiest site in Islam and the most sacred for Jews, who call it Temple Mount. It is also Judaism's holiest site, once home to biblical Temples.

Resisting global pressure to remove the metal detectors, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's security cabinet insisted that they were needed to prevent arms being smuggled into the shrine.

Since Sunday, Palestinians in Jerusalem have protested against Israeli occupation forces placing electronic gates at the entrances of Al-Aqsa and have insisted that they be removed. They refused to enter, preferring to pray outside, in some cases filling the narrow alleyways of the Old City's Muslim quarter.

The Israeli army said the Palestinian had spoken of the Jerusalem holy site and of dying as a martyr in a Facebook post.

However, Palestinians claim the extra security measures represent a change and a further erosion of their rights to access to the holy site.

The spokesperson said that following assessments, "heightened security measures will take place in and around the Old City (of East Jerusalem)".

Israeli police spokesman Mickey Rosenfeld said reinforcements have been deployed in and around the Old City.

In recent years, religious opinion has shifted, and growing numbers of Jews are visiting the compound.

Israel occupied East Jerusalem during the 1967 Six-Day War.

Resident Hashem Abu Diab said the mosque was "the last place we have in this country".

Muslim leaders believe that the metal detectors are part of an Israeli attempt to expand control over the site. Jordan, the custodian of the holy site, has also been involved in mediation efforts.
