When a petrol vehicle ban is not a real petrol vehicle ban

When a petrol vehicle ban is not a real petrol vehicle ban”

MOTORING experts have warned the UK Government's "green revolution" in banning new petrol and diesel cars by 2040 and replacing them with electric vehicles are massive and will cost trillions of pounds.

Swedish carmaker Volvo has said all new models will have an electric motor from the same year.

The environmental push comes as the United Kingdom plans to invest more than US$1 billion in autonomous and zero-emission technology, and outlined plans to invest £246 million in battery technology research.

This is merely the most recent moratorium on gasoline powered cars.

The share of cars powered by electric, hybrid and alternative fuels in France is small - about 4% - but growing fast. The government can not shy away any longer from the issue of diesel cars clogging up and polluting our cities and must now provide real solutions, not just gimmicks.

According to Public Health England, poor air quality is the largest environmental risk to public health in the United Kingdom, despite air quality having improved significantly in recent decades.

Bridges added that electric vehicles were the future and a move from petrol and diesel to low-emission transport was "a natural evolution".

S Korea offers rare talks with North on tensions, family reunions
It was the Moon government's first formal proposal for talks with North Korea since its May 10 inauguration. Suh said he expected a "positive response" to the idea, without elaborating on what he meant by hostility.

The plans would set aside £1 billion for ultra-low emissions vehicles, including £100 million for public electric charging infrastructure and plug-in auto grants, and £290 million has been earmarked for retrofitting old public transport and propping up sales of hybrid taxis.

"We still believe that well-targeted scrappage schemes could make a significant contribution in reducing [nitrogen oxides] emissions by removing some of the oldest, most polluting cars and vans from our roads".

Electric vehicles will likely grow in popularity in the second half of the next decade due to plunging battery prices, according to a Bloomberg report.

"We would have preferred a target to hit and the ways to hit it being left to industry to work out, but the industry has a history of meeting targets and when we know more detail we work towards them". In addition to a new goal for the city to operate a zero-emission public transit system by 2050, a new zero-emission zone for private vehicles will be established by 2025 that will eventually be expanded to encompass the entire city.

Part of the new plan involves an offer of $260 million to local governments to change rules where vehicle emissions surpass European Union thresholds.

Plug-in cars are still only about one percent of all United Kingdom vehicle sales, yet the country is one of only a handful worldwide to have more than 100,000 plug-in automobiles on the road. Electrified vehicles of all kinds now make up only about 3% of all cars sold worldwide, according to data from IHS Markit.

The government must work with the motor industry to address concerns over the affordability and performance of electric and hybrid vehicles in order for the United Kingdom to move beyond petrol and diesel cars by 2040.
