Israel Says Embassy Guard Opened Fire After Being Attacked

Israel Says Embassy Guard Opened Fire After Being Attacked”

The staff of Israel's embassy to Jordan, including a security guard involved in a shooting incident in which two Jordanians were killed, returned to Israel from Amman on Monday, an official from the Israeli prime minister's Office said.

A diplomatic standoff between Israel and Jordan over a deadly shooting at Israel's embassy in the kingdom once again tests the strategic, if turbulent ties forged in a 1994 peace treaty.

Israel's foreign ministry failed to refer to such demands in its statement, but said the guard has diplomatic immunity, according to worldwide conventions.

The statement said the building was in the Israeli embassy compound, but the Israeli media reports indicated that the building was not part of the compound. In a sign of the importance Israel places on its ties with Jordan, the Israeli government moved quickly to restore calm. Israeli foreign ministry spokesman Emmanuel Nahshon said the incident was under "completely censorsed" and forbade Israeli and accredited media reporters in Israel to report the incident.

Jordan is not allowing the guard to leave the country, and Israel has confined its staff at the embassy to the embassy grounds.

Initial checks suggested the two Jordanian men had entered the embassy compound as workmen, they said.

Following repeated clashes on the Temple Mount in late 2015 and the beginning of 2016, Jordan said it would install security cameras on the Temple Mount to "expose Israeli assaults and violations".

The security guard shot dead the Jordanian attacker, while a second Jordanian there at the time was also killed.

The second Jordanian, who died from his wounds in hospital, was identified as the building's landlord.

A statement from Israel's government said among those to return is a security officer, who had shot dead a Jordanian in self-defence.

Israel installed metal detectors at entrances to the site after an attack nearby on July 14 that killed two of its policemen.

Israel's ambassador to the United Nations said yesterday Israel is working to calm the situation in Jerusalem following a flare-up of violence, but it will do whatever is necessary to maintain security at a holy site.

The embassy has been a meeting point for protests regarding turmoil in the Palestinian territories.

Jordan's ruling Hashemite dynasty, said to trace its ancestry to Prophet Muhammad, draws much of its legitimacy from its role as protector of the shrine.
