Danish DIY sub 'deliberately sank' after journalist vanished”

Police have said that Swedish journalist Kim Wall (30) is missing after taking a ride on Peter Madsen's homemade 17-metre sub, which sank on Friday morning.

Monday afternoon, the authorities remained without news of this 30 year-old woman, whose body had not been found in the submarine refloated over the weekend.

The vessel was recovered Saturday in 23 feet of water at Koge Bay - but Wall was not aboard.

Madsen also told reporters at the scene that the vessel had sunk after running into problems with its ballast tank, but Danish police have since said he has given them a different version of events - although they would not say what.

Monday 9:30am: Madsen's lawyer informs media that her client accepts his preliminary detainment on charges of manslaughter.

"It appears to be a deliberate act to sink the submarine", Jens Moller, the chief homicide investigator of the Copenhagen police, said at a Sunday news conference.

Madsen claims Wall had disembarked on an island about three-and-a-half hours into their trip on Thursday night, according to Copenhagen police. The search for Wall in the water, from the air and on land, continues.

What is likely the last picture taken of Wall, showed the freelance journalist, smiling, aboard the sub and standing alongside Madsen, whose back is turned, just before the Nautilus departed on its ill-fated Thursday voyage.

Police gave no other information on why they thought the Nautilus was deliberately sunk, but it contradicts Mr Madsen's explanation that there was a technical fault. "But I guess that was pretty good because otherwise I still would have been down there".

Madsen, who is an entrepreneur, artist, submarine builder and aerospace engineer, said he didn't contest his detention - but denied any involvement in Wall's disappearance.

Police in Sweden said they tried without success to contact Wall by phone and her family had not heard from her. "Whether the woman was on board the submarine at the time of her disappearance is unclear", police said. It was built to carry eight people.
