Mark Zuckerberg: Charlottesville Prompts Facebook Hate Crackdown”

Per the Business Insider report, after Facebook management shut down the group, posters featuring an anime character and the words "Silenced, but not silent" began appearing across the company's campus.

Social media sites such as Twitter and Facebook have been instrumental in the rise of the divisive political climate, from their role in helping people spread fake news during the presidential election to the use of Twitter as a megaphone by President Trump, whose views white supremacists and neo-Nazis are cheering, echoing or amplifying.

International Business Times has reached out to Facebook for comment.

Zuckerberg allegedly made a decision to axe the message board due to "harassing messages", and Facebook's human resources head Lori Goler said in a statment that "The FB Anon internal Facebook group violated our terms of service, which require people who use Facebook (including our employees) to use an authentic identity on our platform".

When white supremacists plan rallies like the one in Charlottesville, Va., they often organize on Facebook, pay for supplies with PayPal, book lodging with Airbnb and ride with Uber. A lot of the interested parties will be following closely to see whether it will start with the stamping out of hateful content or the preservation of free speech. "Facebook does not allow hate speech or praise of terrorist acts or hate crimes, and we are actively removing any posts that glorify the horrendous act committed in Charlottesville", a Facebook spokesperson said as quoted by The Hill. Zuckerberg specifically mentioned the events in Virginia. A page which coordinated the white supremacist rally in Charlotte was only taken down by Facebook after being in existence for more than a month.

According to reports, the online discussion group inside Facebook where employees conversed anonymously turned ugly and transformed the forum into a hub for political comments.

Online fundraising sites GoFundMe and Patreon also banned people and canceled fundraisers associated with right-wing hate groups. "We aren't born with such extreme views", he wrote. "We have always welcomed people from every walk of life to our stores around the world and showed them that Apple is inclusive of everyone", he noted.

In his post, Zuckerberg says debate is healthy and that Facebook should be a good place to share thoughts and ideas, but there are limits to what's acceptable.

"There is no place for hate in our community", Zuckerberg wrote. At the same time, the laws of many countries like Germany, and other global conventions, explicitly limit these freedoms when it comes to hate speech.

Facebook isn't the only organization taking a stand against hate in recent days. For the mainly USA companies, this would mean that they would have to be increasingly aware of the differences between United States law and culture and those of other countries.

'I believe Apple has led by example, and we're going to keep doing that'. "We need to bring people closer together, and I know we can make progress at that", he said.
