"I wanted to get this over and done with, and then everyone would leave me alone", Wanczyk, the mother of a 31-year-old daughter and a 26-year-old son, told reporters.

Wanczyk chose to take a lump-sum payment of $480.5 million or $336 million after taxes, rather than claim the full amount over time, according to the state lottery.

Mavis Wanczyk laughs beside state treasurer Deb Goldberg during a news conference (Josh Reynolds/AP) The previous evening, she recalled, she was leaving work with a firefighter and remarked: "It's never going to be me. It's just a pipe dream that I've always had".

But shortly before 8 a.m., the lottery said it had made a mistake, and that the winning ticket was sold across the state at the Pride Station & Store in Chicopee, in Western Massachusetts.

But her exhilaration Thursday comes from being the first person to touch the winning ticket.

Bolduc said he missed out on all the confusion since he hadn't seen the initial announcement about the Watertown shop.

"The lottery was able to tell us that it was sold here yesterday around 2:30 (p.m.), to a middle-aged woman", he said.

Operations in Moscow would resume in September, but consular services for Russians in St. Embassy to cut 755 positions in the country - roughly two-thirds - by September 1.

The lottery said the ticket was bought from a convenience store in Chicopee, about 160km west of Boston.

The announcement that a victor had come forward came after a turbulent morning in which lottery officials initially misidentified not only the store that sold the winning ticket, but the town. Five white balls were drawn from a drum containing 69 balls and one red ball was selected from a drum with 26 balls.

It snapped a string of 20 consecutive draws without a Powerball jackpot victor.

Wednesday's Powerball jackpot was up to an estimated $700 million, the second largest jackpot in history.

According to the official Powerball website, the next jackpot to be awarded Saturday night is valued at $40 million.

The one-time cash option for Wednesday's jackpot was set earlier in the day at roughly $443 million by the multi-state lottery game that is played in 44 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rica and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
