Houston Police Officer Drowns In Harvey Floodwaters”

A Houston police officer drowned Sunday morning when he was trapped by floodwaters brought to the region by Harvey, city officials confirmed Tuesday afternoon. "Sgt. Perez lost his life because he tried to make it happen, he tried to get at his post.that's the ultimate sacrifice", he said.

At least nine people are reported to have died, and rescuers are still trying to reach others that remain stranded. During a roll call on Monday, his colleagues realized that Perez was missing from work.

Update 4:50 p.m. August 28: The Harris County Sheriff's Office said on Monday afternoon that it was not immediately able to confirm a report that a family of six was swept away by floodwaters and killed on Sunday. Authorities called his wife, who said she had not seen her husband since 4 a.m. the previous day.

Authorities immediately began "an extensive search" for the potential path Perez would have taken, Acevedo said, and had narrowed the search to an area near Hardy Toll Road and Beltway 8 by Monday evening, but conditions were still too unsafe to begin a recovery effort.

"Once our dive team got there it was too treacherous to go under and look for him", he said. According to Chief Acevedo, within 20 minutes the team was able to find Sgt. Perez.

The unidentified police officer, who had been with the Houston Police Department for more than 30 years, was driving along Interstate 45 near Hardy Toll Road on Sunday morning when high waters swallowed his vehicle. The department has not yet formally notified the officer's family.

As he became choked up, Chief Acevedo said, "Steve is one of the sweetest people I've ever met". So I told his wife, if the Lord's going to take him today how do you think he would want to go, laying in bad, watching a disaster, or doing what he's done for 34 years.
