Trump, Haley Seek to Break Nuclear Accord With Tehran - Iranian-American Group

Trump, Haley Seek to Break Nuclear Accord With Tehran - Iranian-American Group”

The UN's nuclear watchdog has reported that Iran is staying within the main limits set down in a 2015 multilateral agreement that Donald Trump has insisted Tehran is violating.

Iran remains in compliance with the 2015 nuclear deal, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) report showed, despite tensions between Tehran and Washington threatening the agreement.

An Israeli military strike may be the only option left to effectively derail Iran's nuclear program, former U.S. Ambassador to the UN John Bolton said.

However, the IAEA officials said they would not help the Trump administration make a false case for abandoning the agreement. "We just don't want to give them an excuse to".

In a televised interview later in the day, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani also rejected the demands, saying "regulations dictate our relations with the (International Atomic Energy) Agency, not the United States".

The U.N. body has sided with Iran over the U.S.in a row over whether it was necessary to inspect restricted Iranian military sites to ensure Iran was complying with a 2015 nuclear treaty.

"She conveyed that the IAEA will need to continue to robustly exercise its authorities to verify Iran's declaration and monitor the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action", the spokesman added, using the deal's official name.

The administration has placed the accord, which was negotiated during Barack Obama's presidency, under interagency review. Russian Federation and the United Kingdom.

Iran has reiterated commitment to the terms of the deal despite Trump's stance, but has also said its military sites are off limits, raising the risk of a stand-off if a request for access were put to a vote.

In April, he ordered a review of whether a suspension of nuclear sanctions on Iran was in the U.S. interest.

Iran now has less than a third of the amount of enriched uranium that it's permitted to have under the JCPOA. Iran has one of the world's largest oil reserves and has gained access to new, lucrative foreign contracts in exchange for curbing its nuclear production.

"Almost any other US administration would have a very hard time shrugging off the data provided by the IAEA since it's such a trusted source", said Colin Kahl, a former deputy assistant to Obama. Numerous other high-ranking Iranian officials have also come out in support of the deal and against US accusations in recent days. In addition to the nuclear treaty dispute, the USA accuses Iran of destabilizing the Middle East and funding terrorism overseas.

In a Washington Post op-ed, Bolton wrote at the time that given the narrowed window for regime change, a targeted Israeli strike was the only time-sensitive option to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.
