IS attack on Sinai convoy 'kills 18 Egyptian police'”

Most attacks have been claimed by Ansar Beit El-Maqdis, or Sinai Province, who pledged allegiance to the Islamic State group in 2014.

The police suffered their injuries after a suspected militant detonated an explosive device to block them from entering the building and during an exchange of fire that followed, security sources said.

Suspected militants Monday ambushed a police convoy in Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, killing 18 policemen and wounding several others, including a police brigadier-general, according to security and military officials.

The suspected militants first opened fire at security force members, prompting them to respond, the ministry added on its official Facebook page.

Five police officers were injured in the shootout that took place in the neighbourhood of Agouza, Giza governorate, during a raid on two suspected terrorist hideouts, Sputnik reported.

Since then, hundreds of Egyptian security personnel have been killed in attacks across Sinai - especially in the peninsula's volatile northeastern quadrant, which shares borders with both Israel and the Hamas-run Gaza Strip. The wounded included a police brigadier general.

Egypt has been suffering from a spike in terrorist attacks targeting civilians in the mainland over the past year.

In March, the military said militants killed 10 soldiers during an army raid in Sinai's central region. One of the militants, they said, died when an explosive device he meant to use against the policemen went off prematurely, killing him instantly. Five policemen, including three officers, were also injured in the shootout.
