Family of three dies after falling into volcanic crater in Italy”

The incident happened Tuesday at the Solfatara Crater in Pozzuoli, a popular tourist attraction near Naples. "The local civil protection department said that inside the pit was boiling hot mud".

Emergency crews and tourists rushed to the scene to try to help the family.

His mother, 42, and father, 45, tried to pull him to safety only for the base of the crater to collapse. The couple then fell in as they tried to save him.Authorities said the three likely died of asphyxiation from deadly gasses.Another seven-year-old son stayed behind the fence and survived.

The family were visiting the Solfatara crater at Campi Flegrei (Burning Fields) about 30km east of Naples, when they fell into the crater, killing the parents and their 11 year old son. It is not known if they died from the gas fumes or died of burns.

They are believed to have crossed through a safety barrier preventing people from getting to the crater.
