Israel PM scheduled to meet Egyptian President in NY”

As president El Sisi discussed Egypt's efforts to revive the peace process, he also said that any worldwide initiatives with the goal of reaching a reasonable compromise between all the interested parties were welcome.

Sisi addressed the General Assembly hours after he met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Danny Danon, Israeli Ambassador to the United Nations, said it was due to the fact that the visit took place at the hotel where the Egyptians were staying and that the Israelis were guests.

The Egyptian president's office released a similar pronouncement, saying that the two leaders discussed "ways to resume the peace process and establish a Palestinian state".

Egypt has been leading mediation efforts between Palestinian arch-rivals Fatah and Hamas as part of a push to return to the forefront of Middle East diplomacy.

The last time that the two leaders met was in secret in April 2016 at Sisi's presidential residence in Cairo.

Egyptian President Abdul Fatah Sisi addresses the UN General Assembly on September 19.

But that relationship has been tested since the July 2013 overthrow of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi and the subsequent bloody crackdown on Morsi's supporters.

After US President Donald Trump assumed office in January, bilateral relations between Egypt and the US significantly improved.

Last month, Egypt described the USA decision to reduce aid as a "misguided decision given the nature of the strategic relations" that have bound the two countries for four decades.

Trump has described peace between Israelis and Palestinians as "the ultimate deal".

The settlement will be based on the two-state solution and global resolutions on the dispute, he continued. "It's a great pleasure to have this meeting with you", Sissi told Netanyahu at the start of the meeting, speaking through a translator.

"When we say we want to rectify the religious rhetoric, it means that we want to filter the false ideology and the misconceptions", Sisi explained.

Trump visited Israel and the occupied West Bank in May.
