Uber boss Dara Khosrowshahi apologises to London for 'mistakes we've made'

Uber boss Dara Khosrowshahi apologises to London for 'mistakes we've made'”

The chief executive of Uber apologised Monday for "mistakes" made by the U.S. ride-sharing app after London authorities refused to renew its licence, but still vowed to appeal the decision. The issues cited by TfL included Uber's approach to reporting serious criminal offences and obtaining background checks on drivers as well as its approach to explaining these use of "Greyball" software. Uber didn't report serious criminal offenses, including a sexual assault, to London police, authorities said, and failed to conduct proper driver background checks. "On behalf of everyone at Uber internationally, I apologize for the mistakes we've made", Khosrowshahi wrote in an open letter to Londoners.

On Friday, 22 September, Transport for London (TfL) informed Uber that it would not renew the company's private hire operator license, which is set to expire at the end of this month.

Uber's customers began panicking because this meant as of September 30, the American company will no longer be licensed, but it can continue to operate until all appeals are exhausted.

"We regularly talk to companies around the world about innovation that could improve transport in London", Hurwitz, said in a statement.

"While we haven't been asked to make any changes, we'd like to know what we can do", Tom Elvidge, Uber's general manager in London, told the newspaper.

Mr. Khan has reacted positively to the apology in the day by Mr. Khosrowshahi, three days after the decision-and the shock of TfL not to renew the license of the company cars with chauffeurs, private in London, including for security reasons.

In response, Mayor Sadiq Khan told Radio 4's Today programme this morning that Uber was bringing the full might of its PR to weigh against the ruling. 40,000 people have chosen to become Uber drivers.

Trump takes advantage of the London attack to promote his travel ban
Meanwhile, The United States Supreme Court is expected to hear the oral argument to decide on the travel ban's constitutionality. Prime Minister Theresa May returned to London to chair a meeting of the government's emergency response committee.

He said Uber, which he took control of four weeks ago, wanted to "make things right" for its 3.5m London customers and 40,000 drivers. Chief Executive Logan Green told the Associated Press in August that Lyft planned to go global "in the not too distant future".

Sky News has learnt that the world's biggest ride-hailing app has appointed a top firm of boardroom headhunters to fill the new post in an effort to fix relations with regulators and politicians.

Khosrowshahi clarified that Uber would fight back against the city's decision. The city's recent decision to pull Uber's operating license has inflamed these tensions once again.

The new rules, which Uber lobbied the Ministry of Transport for, include cheaper and faster P endorsements for drivers to allow them to carry passengers legally.

"This was one of the unusual things around the TfL notice yesterday is they are the ones who do all of the checks and license the drivers".

The trade union of employees, GMB has, however, hoped to reverse that other cities will follow London in banning Uber, accused of "social dumping".
