Palestinians get place in Interpol

Palestinians get place in Interpol”

JERUSALEM • Palestine joined Interpol as a member state yesterday, a move opposed by Israel, in a vote at the worldwide police organisation's general assembly in Beijing, Interpol said.

The Palestinian bid was part of efforts to push for membership in worldwide institutions to advance the goal of statehood.

Interpol on Wednesday approved the Palestinian Authority's membership bid, a new victory in its drive for worldwide representation despite strong Israeli opposition.

"We will persist in our efforts to seek membership in other multinational agencies and organizations; this is consistent with the Palestinian people's right to self-determination and statehood".

The Jerusalem Post reported earlier this week that Israel was anxious Palestine's membership could mean issuing warrants against Israeli citizens.

The Israeli Foreign Ministry, which opposed membership of Palestine, demanded that vote be postponed for at least one year.

Israel's Deputy Minister for Diplomacy, Michael Oren, criticised the vote, writing on Twitter: "By admitting "Palestine", which praises terrorists of the past and refuses to condemn those of today, Interpol makes the world less safe".

Former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak called it "another failure" for Netanyahu. The Palestinian foreign minister added in an interview with the Palestinian press that the joining of the Palestinian Authority is the result of countries that choose to defend the existence of INTERPOL and promote the body's basic values.

The U.N. General Assembly recognized Palestine as a non-member observer state in 2012 and UNESCO approved it as a full member.

"Such an acceptance sends a clear message to the Israeli government that we are not population centers at its mercy; we believe in a system that is based on the global rule of law and due process, and one which enforces accountability and cooperation at the worldwide level", she added.

Before past attempts to earn membership in Interpol, Palestinian officials said they wanted to work with the organization to pursue Palestinian expatriates suspected of corruption and other crimes.

A senior Palestinian official said there were no plans to sue any Israelis through Interpol.

According to al-Maliki, the Palestinian victory was made possible because of most of the member states' principled positions. More than 130 countries recognize Palestine as a state.

To join the world's second-largest organization after the United Nations, the Palestinians needed two-thirds of all votes cast - they received three-quarters.
