Erdogan And Rouhani Threaten Sanctions Against Iraqi Kurdistan

Erdogan And Rouhani Threaten Sanctions Against Iraqi Kurdistan”

Top officials from the two neighbors signed the documents in a ceremony in Tehran, attended by Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and his visiting Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyib Erdogan.

The Iraqi government has demanded that the Kurdish leadership cancel the result of the referendum to avoid sanctions, worldwide isolation and possibly a military intervention.

"We held talks on the common threats [Iran and Turkey], and also on the referendum in the Iraqi Kurdistan Region with an emphasis on the maintenance of Iraq's integrity and rejection of the referendum", Gen. Baqeri told reporters Monday in Tehran.

"Iraqi forces are dressed in black and there is a large number of Iranian forces", said Shwan Abu Bakr, the customs chief at the Bashmakh border post between Iraq's Kurdish region and Iran.

The other cooperation documents were inked by the national broadcasters of the two countries, as well as the National Library of Iran and the Archives of the Turkish Prime Minister's Office.

"America and Israel benefit from the vote..." President Erdogan said on August 21 that a joint military operation against the PKK in the Kandil Mountains and along the Iraq-Iran border was a possibility, although Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) later denied any claims of joint operations.

Calling the referendum "illegitimate", Erdogan said that "a development of this sort will isolate the Kurdish regional government. A referendum which was conducted by sitting side by side with Mossad has no legitimacy", he said, referring to the Israeli intelligence agency.

The spokesman added that in discussions with turkey regarding Syria there are some positive trends and the two countries have entered a new atmosphere in their relations.

Mr Rouhani also said that Tehran and Ankara are planning to expand their economic ties. "As Iran and Turkey - and the [Iraqi] central government - there are still heavier steps for us to take".

"Holding the referendum in Iraq's Kurdistan will help the Western-Zionist-Arab front supporting Takfiri terrorism achieve its objectives and is definitely in contradiction to the interests of the Iraqi people, particularly the Kurds", Shamkhani said.

Speaking at a meeting with Akar in Tehran, Shamkhani said the KRG's approach to hold the independence vote was "irresponsible and amateur".
