Galen Rupp and Tirunesh Dibaba Are Chicago Marathon Champions”

Galen Rupp became the first American man to win the Chicago Marathon since 2002 and three-time Olympic gold medallist Tirunesh Dibaba stormed to an emphatic victory in the women's race on Sunday.

It crowned a superb season for the 32-year-old after she followed second place at the London Marathon in 2:17:56 - the fifth fastest time ever - with a 10,000m silver medal at the World Championships. Joan Benoit Samuelson held the previous fastest American woman in Chicago (2:21:21) from October 20, 1985 until Sunday.

At the 37km mark, the lead group was down to three Rupp, Abel Kirui and Sisay Lemma, but it wasn't long before Rupp pulled away from his two challengers and they were unable to answer.

Rupp, 31, was the first American man to win the Chicago Marathon since Morocco-born Khalid Khannouchi in 2002.

The last time an American runner won the Chicago Marathon was Deena Kastor in 2005.

The men split 1:05:49 through the halfway point while the women were not far back in 1:08:48. Stanley Biwott, a 2:03:51 marathoner and victor of New York City in 2015, dropped out shortly after.

Jordan Hasay finished third in 2:20:57 and became the fastest American woman in the Chicago Marathon history.

Galen Rupp, the three-time Olympian, crossed the finish line with an unofficial time of 2 hours, 9 minutes and 20 seconds over the 26.2-mile course.

Kirui came in second place only 28 seconds behind Rupp, and another Kenyan, Bernard Kipyego, came in third.

The win is also a bounce back for McFadden, who finished fourth at this year's Boston Marathon following surgery for blood clots in February.
