Palestinian factions Fatah and Hamas sign reconciliation deal in major breakthrough

Palestinian factions Fatah and Hamas sign reconciliation deal in major breakthrough”

The Palestinian Authority and Islamist movement Hamas reached an agreement to reconcile after a decade of mistrust, but offered few details on security arrangements in the Gaza Strip that had been key to negotiations.

Further information will be announced at a noon news conference (10GMT) in Cairo, where unity talks between the rival factions began on Tuesday.

The two Palestinian factions will meet again in the Egyptian capital next.

Palestinian media reported that the two sides agreed to form a committee to solve, within four months, one very local problem that has dogged previous attempts at reconciliation: what to do about Hamas bureaucrats who will be out of a job when the Palestinian Authority resumes its rule in Gaza.

"President Abbas has repeatedly stressed his readiness to visit Gaza", Majid al-Fitiani, secretary of Fatah's Revolutionary Council, told Anadolu Agency on Thursday.

He said the unity government would "run all institutions without exception", including all border crossings with Israel and in Rafah, Gaza's only access point with Egypt.

He went on to say that Abbas planned to reverse all measures he had recently taken against the Gaza Strip, which since mid-2007 has been governed by Hamas.

Israel viewed the Palestinian accord warily, saying it must abide by previous global agreements and terms set out by the Quartet of Middle East peace mediators - including the recognition of Israel and the disarming of Hamas.

The split has complicated any potential peace negotiations with Israel, as Hamas remains committed to the Jewish state's destruction and has vowed it will not hand over its arsenal as part of a reconciliation deal with the PA.

Thousands of Palestinians took to the streets across Gaza on Thursday in celebration of the unity pact, with loudspeakers on open cars blasting national songs, youths dancing and hugging, and many waving Palestine and Egyptian flags.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu wrote on Facebook that any reconciliation deal must make Hamas disarm and "end its war to destroy Israel".
