Google Maps pulls cupcake calorie-counting feature after backlash

Google Maps pulls cupcake calorie-counting feature after backlash”

The idea behind the concept was simple enough - to let users know how many calories they could be burning if they chose to walk instead of drive a route, The Washington Post noted.

We are more than certain this move was implemented with the hopes of encouraging Google Maps users to get motivated to walk more instead of driving, all in the quest for a healthier lifestyle.

The feature was introduced last week as a test to some iOS users but a Google rep has since told Tech Crunch that the app was being pulled following "strong user feedback". "One mini cupcake is around 110 calories".

Google introduced a new feature to Google Maps on iPhone this week, only to remove it within 24 hours following user complaints. It turns out that Wednesday is National Chocolate Cupcake Day (not to be confused with regular National Cupcake Day, which is December 15) - which would have been a prime opportunity for gimmicks galore to show off Google's cupcake calorie counter. And it could be very a negative (or even triggering) experience for people who have an eating disorder.

People from all walks of life generally don't like to be reminded of calories, whether it's how many they're consuming or how many they could be burning.

' We're on the Right Path': Trump Responds to Senator Corker's WWIII Accusations
Corker also helped tutor Trump on foreign affairs, and he in turn considered the senator as a possible running mate and secretary of state.

Namely, the feature's info did not really explain how and what is an "average person".

For now, we don't know whether Google will bring this feature back.

According to the Telegraph, "Users have reacted badly to cupcake metric on social media describing it as "shaming" and some saying it could be a trigger for people suffering from eating disorders". Or Google could embellish the feature to take into account details about the user's health, including general factors like age, weight, and gender.

And although this new Maps feature might sound similar to how some restaurants are required to show calorie counts on menus, this is more aggressive.
