Australia's Deputy PM officially a Kiwi citizen - High Court

Australia's Deputy PM officially a Kiwi citizen - High Court”

Mr. Joyce said: "I respect the verdict of the court".

Mr Joyce's exit strips the government of its one-seat majority, but he could return through a likely by-election.

Barnaby Joyce was one of seven politicians affected by a High Court decision which disqualified him because he held dual citizenship when he ran for election a year ago.

Mr Joyce offered his congratulations to Senators Matt Canavan and Nick Xenophon, whose citizenship doubts have now been cleared, and the latter of whom is voluntarily stepping down to seek election in South Australia's State Parliament.

"I had no reason to believe that, you know, I was a citizen of any other country than Australia".

While the ruling initially put the Turnbull government's slim majority in the Lower House at risk, Independent MP Cathy McGowan promised the Coalition she would support it on supply and confidence.

The other four politicians - Fiona Nash, Malcolm Roberts, Larissa Waters and Scott Ludlam - had been elected to the Senate. The government argued that five of the lawmakers should still be eligible, including Joyce, because they were unaware of dual citizenship at the time of the election.

On Friday afternoon, the High Court ruled Joyce is no longer a Member of Parliament.

The former Deputy Prime Minister has told The Australian if he wins the by-election, he will lobby for a referendum to be held on changing the Constitution to simplify the eligibility requirements for MPs regarding citizenship.

But the court found Mr. Joyce was a New Zealander by descent at the time of his nomination past year.

He later found he was British because his father left Cyprus while it was a British colony.
