Davey Martinez: Washington Nationals hire former Chicago Cubs bench coach as manager”

They did not meet with Joe Girardi, the World Series-winning manager let go by the Yankees last week.

Martinez, 53, has served as Joe Maddon's bench since their days with Tampa Bay, when the duo also formed a manager-bench coach duo for the Rays.

The ballclub is expected to tap Chicago Cubs bench coach Dave Martinez to take the reigns after parting ways with Dusty Baker. Nationals General Manager Mike Rizzo was the scouting director for Arizona at the time. Since the Lerner family purchsed the club in 2006, no manager had been guaranteed more than two years, not even established and successful skippers like Baker and Davey Johnson. He is fluent in Spanish, well-versed in advanced analytics and multiple Nationals players have spoken highly of him. Two years later, Williams was sacked following a debacle in 2015.

Donald Trump releases 'Stand for the National Anthem' petition
In a later tweet, Trump suggested action needed to be taken in response to the large number of players who continue to protest during the national anthem.

In 2015, it was reported that the Nationals were set to offer to the managerial job to former Padres manager Bud Black after the World Series, but that deal fell apart when the two sides could not agree on a salary. He has interviewed for several openings in recent years, including the Nationals job four years ago, but to date has not been selected.

But the Nationals did not struggle to negotiate with their manager this time, committing three years (and perhaps a fourth) to Martinez in a marked departure from their normal handling of managers. He has always been a rumored candidate for a step up to a managerial spot, and Washington will provide that opportunity. This one likely won't wait that long, though a press conference might.

The announcement will be official after the World Series because baseball doesn't like to announce things during the October Classic.
