Japanese firm gives non-smokers extra six days holidayā€¯

The rollout of the new benefit comes as other companies in Japan grapple with how to encourage their own workers to make healthier choices and as the government faces worldwide pressure to crack down on public smoking before the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.

One company in Japan, where smoking is deeply ingrained into culture, chose to do something about it.

To promote productive work culture and healthy lifestyle, a Japanese company has promised to reward six additional holidays to employees who don't smoke. But Piala's smoking room is in the basement, which caused smoking employees to leave the 29th-floor office for breaks multiple times a day.

Marketing firm Piala Inc introduced the new paid leave allowance in September after non-smokers complained they were working more than their colleagues who smoked.

"We don't give punishment for smoking", said Piala spokesman Hirotaka Matsushima.

According to The Telegraph, Tokyo governor Yuriko Koike is arranging to put in a place a smoking ban in public places in the Japanese capital.

Since the introduction of the policy no fewer than 30 people out of the total 120 have availed the policy. But most restaurants and bars still allow smoking.
