Supreme Court rejects Samsung appeal in Apple patents case

Supreme Court rejects Samsung appeal in Apple patents case”

Samsung is obviously not happy about the court's decision.

The US Supreme Court has declined to hear Samsung's appeal to a ruling regarding Apple's patents on several features, reported Mashable. From there, Samsung appealed to the Supreme Court, which is where the case met its end today.

The current ruling involved Apple's famous slide-to-unlock functionality that the company had patented at the time of the release of the first generation iPhone.

According to the report, the fight between Apple and Samsung is not over.

Apple initially sued Samsung in April 2011, claiming infringement of patents, trademarks, user interface and style, and Samsung immediately countersued, claiming infringement of mobile-communications patents. Since then, Samsung has filed multiple appeals against the judgment and briefly succeeded in getting the decision overturned before it was later reinstated. The patents covered some popular features on early iPhone models, such as ' Slide to unlock, ' autocorrect, and quick links. And after three years of back and forth, the US Supreme Court has now finally laid the matter to rest - declaring Apple as victorious. Samsung was still ordered to pay $119.6 million in damages to Apple for violating three patents, which is a far cry from the $2.2 billion Apple was seeking.

"Our argument was supported by many who believed that the court should hear the case to reinstate fair standards that promote innovation and prevent abuse of the patent system", Samsung said in a statement Monday.

Although 120 million Dollars sounds pretty impressive, it is just a fraction of the total USD 2 billion demanded by Apple's lawyers from Samsung for the infringement.

The company also said the ruling would let Apple "unjustly profit" from an invalid patent. It is set to last for five days.

"I would prefer to not keep doing this until I retire", she said at a hearing on October 25.
