IEyes? An Apple AR wearable device is reportedly on track for 2020”

Apple is working on an augmented reality (AR) headset, and it might have it ready as early as 2020, a according to new report from Bloomberg's Mark Gurman says.

Apple's untethered headset would have a newly designed chip and operating system, according to Bloomberg's sources, though those details could change. The chip will be similar in concept to the "system-on-a-package" component that's found inside the Apple Watch. It will also have a brand new OS, now labeled "rOS" for "reality operating system".

With the headset at least two years away, Apple wants developers to bring new AR features to the iPhone, such as multiplayer capabilities for games and more innovative apps for the consumer.

Apple CEO Tim Cook has not been shy about his admiration for augmented reality, and how the company thinks its a potentially huge deal for everyone from regular Joes and Janes to big business.

HSBC's profits jump as the bank looks to Asia for growth
Adjusted profit before tax for the quarter fell 1.5% to $5.44bn, though this was ahead of the $5.41bn company-compiled consensus. Mr Flint, who now heads up retail banking and wealth management at the lender, will take up the role on February 21.

Apple has been slowly dipping its toes into AR waters as of late. READ NEXT:Google launches new spatial audio toolkit to help VR sound design Cook recently acknowledged the calls for Apple to build an AR headset or smart glasses, saying he "doesn't give a rats" about being the first to the idea.

Reality check: In just a few short months, Apple has gone from the AR sidelines to the front of the pack, with a spate of apps that take full advantage of the Apple's new engine. "As such, this is why so many players like Apple, Google, and Facebook, are looking very closely at augmented reality". Apple is still trying to figure out the best way to interact with the headset, according to the report, and is considering everything from touch panels to voice controls with Siri to head gestures. Previous rumors have revealed that Apple has hundreds of engineers working on AR applications and has developed multiple prototypes for AR glasses, and some bolder bloggers have even speculated that a partnership with Zeiss would lead to a viable product coming out this year. The goal is to have a standalone headset ready to go by 2019, with a shipping date expected in 2020. "The field of view, the quality of the display itself, it's not there yet".

The limitation today is that we have to hold our smartphone or tablet up to our face to experience AR. Are any of you particularly excited about augmented reality? At WWDC, Apple announced a $599 External Graphics Development Kit for macOS developers that includes $100 credit toward the purchase of an HTC Vive.
