Leonardo da Vinci painting shatters auction records

Leonardo da Vinci painting shatters auction records”

The rare Leonardo da Vinci painting "Salvator Mundi" was bought for the large amount in NY, according to CNN International.

The painting has an interesting sales history.

But many art experts argue that Christie's used marketing window dressing to mask the baggage that comes with the Leonardo, from its compromised condition to its complicated buying history and said that the auction house put the artwork in a contemporary sale to circumvent the scrutiny of old masters experts, many of whom have questioned the painting's authenticity and condition.

Jussi Pylkkanen, Christie's president, served as the auctioneer for the battle that lasted just under twenty minutes. The artwork disappeared once again for nearly 50 years, leaving many scholars to believe it had been destroyed, until it resurfaced in 2005 when it was purchased at an American estate sale.

The auction took place on the 15th of November at the Christie's Auction House, and it broke the world record set by Peter Paul Rubens' "Massacre Of The Innocents". It was long believed to have existed but was generally presumed to have been destroyed.

The work was exhibited at The National Gallery in London in 2011, after years of research trying to document its authenticity after it was found, mistaken for a copy, in a United States auction in 2005.

"The composition doesn't come from Leonardo", said Jacques Franck, a Paris-based art historian and Leonardo specialist. It dates to about 1500 and depicts a figure of Christ dressed in Renaissance-style attire, with the right hand raised in benediction and the left holding a crystal orb.

Many celebrities were present at the auction, including Leonardo DiCaprio, who is slated to play the Renaissance painter in an upcoming film by Paramount, singer Jennifer Lopez and singer-songwriter Patti Smith.

According to Christie's, the painting once belonged to King Charles I of England in the mid-1600s.

The "excitement" for Leonardo's work has been "overwhelming".

Francois de Poortere, Head of Old Master Paintings, added: "It is an honor to be entrusted with the sale of this mystical masterpiece". "It has been more than a century since the last such painting turned up and this opportunity will not come again in our lifetime". Since it resurfaced, it has been exhibited at the National Gallery in London and at Christie's showrooms all over the world.

Here is to a moment of art glory.
