Lebanon's Hariri Returns to Lebanon to Tackle Political Crisis

Lebanon's Hariri Returns to Lebanon to Tackle Political Crisis”

Lebanon's Prime Minister Saad Hariri has held talks with the Egyptian president on the political crisis triggered by his resignation.

"Saad Hariri arrived in Cairo on Tuesday evening from Paris to meet President Sisi, and he is scheduled to return to Lebanon on Wednesday", MENA state news agency said.

"With regard to the political situation in Lebanon, I will go to Beirut in the coming days, I will participate in the independence celebrations, and it is there that I will make known my position on these subjects after meeting President [Michel] Aoun", Hariri said after holding talks with Macron.

Hariri, a long-time ally of Saudi Arabia, left Lebanon on November 3 and announced his shock resignation from the Saudi capital the next day, accusing Iran and the Hezbollah militant group backed by Tehran of destabilizing his country.

Hariri's abrupt resignation and continued stay in Saudi Arabia has caused fears for Lebanon's stability.

With the Egyptian president, Hariri discussed the political crisis set off by his resignation - el-Sissi and France's Macron are reportedly trying to mediate a solution that would involve rolling back Hariri's resignation. His press office said he was traveling to Beirut.

Hariri's media team announced on his Twitter account that he had flown to Cyprus instead.

Al-Akhbar noted that negotiations were held between Egypt on one hand and UAE and Saudi on the other in order to preserve the political settlement reached by all the Lebanese parties and supported by the Arab League, according to which PM Hariri keeps in his post. More celebrations are planned for Wednesday.
