Uber data breach affects 57 mln users

Uber data breach affects 57 mln users”

Uber is under fire for hiding a breach of personal information, for a year!

On Tuesday, Bloomberg revealed that Uber paid hackers $100,000 to hide a cyber attack that exposed the personal data of 57 million users of the app in October 2016.

"The truly scary thing here is that Uber paid a bribe, essentially a ransom to make this breach go away, and they acted as if they were above the law", Curry said.

The heist took the names, email addresses and mobile phone numbers of 57 million riders around the world. However, the drivers license numbers of 600 000 drivers in the U.S. were compromised.

Mr Khosrowshahi - who was named CEO in August following the departure of founder Travis Kalanick - said he had only recently learned of the matter himself. He was not at the helm when it happened.

Uber Paid Hackers $100,000 To Delete Stolen Data Of 57 Million Users
Uber paid the hackers $100,000 to delete the compromised data stolen from its records and keep news of the breach quiet

The severity of the incident was compounded amidst revelations that the company had paid $US100,000 ($A132,000) to the hackers to delete the data. In comparison to the most recent Equifax security breach, which exposed the Social Security numbers and credit card numbers of 143 million customer, Uber's 2016 security breach affected far fewer people.

Khosrowshahi, meanwhile, is offering free credit monitoring for drivers whose personal info was stolen in the hack and has hired security expert Matt Olsen, a former staffer at the National Security Agency and director of the National Counterterrorism Center to help the company going forward. Uber said it believes the information was never used but declined to disclose the identities of the attackers.

Khosrowshahi also said that he can't erase the past but the company will learn from its mistakes. "The more information a company shares in a timely manner, the better able we are to support them and prevent others falling victim", an NCSC spokesperson said.

While this isn't the biggest data breach ever, the fact that the company did not disclose it at the time is troubling. Uber bad days will pass once the company take several precautionary measures. "None of this should have happened, and I will not make excuses for it", Khosrowshahi said. "In light of Bloomberg's report, the office of New York State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman confirmed to TechCrunch that it has opened an investigation into the incident". In a coincidentally timed announcement shortly before Uber's hacking disclosure Tuesday, Whitman said she was stepping down as head of Hewlett Packard Enterprise Co. "We are changing the way we do business".
