Florida hires Dan Mullen as next football coach

Florida hires Dan Mullen as next football coach”

As Florida football rumors continue to swirl while the Gators look to fill the program's head coaching vacancy, Mississippi State's Dan Mullen has reportedly emerged as a top target.

Mississippi State knows Dan Mullen is a pretty hot commodity these days and is prepared to "go all in" to try and keep him in Starkville, a source told SI Friday morning. Mullen and Gators athletic director Scott Stricklin, who was hired to replace Jeremy Foley, have a strong working relationship as Stricklin was Mississippi State's AD from 2010-16. He also worked at Florida previously as an assistant during the extremely successful Urban Meyer era.

The Gators have mostly sputtered on offense since.

The Gators fired former coach Jim McElwain last month amid reports of a personality conflict with administrators.

He made the safe choice, one that won't be wildly popular with the Florida faithful.

"Megan and I are very excited to get back to Gainesville and the University of Florida", Mullen said in a statement released by the school.

The experience was "very unusual for him", Angus told the magazine, "but he was always a confident guy, and we made it work". In an interview with the ABC's 7.30, AC/DC lead singer Brian Johnson said Young had told the band to "keep making music" .

Running backs coach Greg Knox has been selected as State's interim head coach for the Bulldogs' pending bowl game.

Mullen is best known for developing quarterbacks. Stricklin noted the 45-year-old coach's success in tutoring quarterbacks such as Alex Smith, Chris Leak, Tim Tebow, Dak Prescott and Nick Fitzgerald, which bodes well for his chances of coaxing better play from Gators signal-callers.

The fast-talking Texan, which coached Rice to a 7-5 record in 2006 before leaving for the coaching job at Tulsa, cracked down on the free-and-loose Sun Devils, turning them into a yes-sir, no-sir program with rules on everything from profanity to hair length.

Only the winning tailed off.

"We've built a football program at Mississippi State that has enjoyed unprecedented success over the last nine seasons".

Tennessee (4-8, 0-8 SEC) ended its season Saturday with a 42-24 loss to Vanderbilt.
